Stream Clean Ups

In June 2001, Petitcodiac Riverkeeper obtained funding to hire a coordinator, George Brun, who organized Petitcodiac Riverkeeper’s first of two successful stream clean-up campaigns. Activities took place in five streams with over 120 volunteers, which resulted in the removal of approximately 17 tons of debris. The campaigns continued intensively for the next two years with the goal of riding these streams of their “historical junk”. Over 40 tons of debris including seven vehicles was removed from 11 different streams during this initial period. Subsequent stream clean-ups have been carried out throughout the watershed, fostering community pride and a stronger sense of public ownership in our river’s health.
