Subject: Memramcook Causeway Removal
Text to copy-paste:
Sentinelles Petitcodiac Riverkeeper (SPR), community members, and other key stakeholders have been courageously advocating for the removal of the Memramcook Causeway for several years. The Memramcook River causeway and associated gates and supporting structures were built in 1973 and have been deteriorating from weather conditions and saltwater ever since.
The causeway has altered the natural ecosystem and has contributed to the elimination of several kilometres of upstream estuary. This has affected the tidal range, reduced access to the watershed, disrupted fish migrations, impacted nutrient exchange in the river system, and disturbed the sediment system.
The Memramcook causeway blocks the river entirely. It is now in violation of regulations involving the Fisheries Act and the Canadian Navigable Waters Act passage of fish and navigable water passage. When the gates are closed, the causeway obstructs fish passage to approximately 60% of the Memramcook River system. As a result, the river has seen the elimination of nearly every fish species that once inhabited the river.
I support Sentinelles Petitcodiac Riverkeeper with their work to remove the causeway and to look at naturalized restoration opportunities for the area.
